Down Payment

A down payment is the upfront cash you pay toward a large purchase like a home, with the rest financed by a loan. A bigger down payment means a smaller loan, lower monthly payments, and less total interest. Putting at least 20% down on a home usually lets you avoid PMI.

Example

A 20% down payment on a $400,000 home is $80,000, leaving a $320,000 mortgage.
