Frequently asked questions

How is overtime pay calculated?
Overtime pay = hourly rate × overtime multiplier × overtime hours. In the US, the FLSA requires at least 1.5× your regular rate ("time and a half") for hours beyond 40 per week for non-exempt employees. Some states (like California) also require daily overtime past 8 hours.
What is time and a half for $20 an hour?
Time and a half for $20/hour is $30/hour. Each overtime hour pays 1.5 × $20 = $30. Working 10 overtime hours at that rate adds $300 to a $800 regular weekly paycheck for a $1,100 total.
Who is exempt from overtime pay?
Salaried employees in executive, administrative, professional, computer, or outside-sales roles earning above the FLSA salary threshold are exempt from overtime. Most hourly workers are non-exempt and must receive overtime. Misclassification is a common wage violation — check your status.
Is overtime taxed at a higher rate?
No — overtime is taxed the same as regular wages. Withholding may look higher on a big overtime paycheck because payroll systems annualize each check, but your actual tax owed is based on total annual income. Any over-withholding comes back as a refund.
