Frequently asked questions

What are franking credits?
Credits for company tax already paid on profits distributed as dividends. A fully franked dividend from a 30% tax company carries a credit of 3/7 of the cash dividend — you declare the grossed-up amount and offset the credit against your own tax.
How do I calculate the franking credit?
Credit = dividend × (company tax rate ÷ (1 − company tax rate)) × franking percentage. Example: a $700 fully franked dividend at the 30% rate carries $300 of credits, so you declare $1,000 of income with $300 already paid.
Are excess franking credits refundable?
Yes — Australian resident individuals and super funds receive a cash refund when franking credits exceed total tax payable. This is why retirees in pension phase (0% tax) receive the full credit back as a refund.
Is the company tax rate 30% or 25%?
Large companies pay 30%. Base-rate entities (turnover under $50M with mostly trading income) pay 25%, so their dividends carry proportionally smaller franking credits — 1/3 of the dividend when fully franked.
